Standing Still

What is it about leaving your life for awhile, that makes everything seem so different, but the same upon your return? is it possible that just changing your background, your surroundings that shifts everything? When I am traveling I feel so artistically fulfilled and perfectly content to just look at things...To learn about new places, people's lives, to try to understand why things are as they are. My need to make art diminishes when I travel. I wonder if it is all about change? Change being the required ingredient in a fulfilling life-if your seeing new things constantly- such as when your traveling, then your fulfilled, content and pretty close to happy. At least this is the case with me. Put me in one place,( home) repeat the same experiences, the same drives, stores, etc and then I start making things again. The art is just more necessary to make when I am standing in one place.

I understand what you mean.

While I've done no ground-breaking travel lately, when I do travel, I see things in a new light and get many ideas. However, it may be weeks or months before any of these ideas make their way out of my head. For a while, I am content to shuffle through my memories.

The work begins when the so-called real world takes over.

I am never happier than when I travel. I think traveling lets us forget about all the pressing concerns we have in our work and lives. It allows us to take a break, just as the term implies. I love it. I am glad that your need to make art returns when you return though!

I take very few art supplies with me when I travel because I've learned that I don't use them. (the exceptiion is my journal) As you say, content to simply absorb it all.

I do bring a sketchbook and a few supplies but never use them as much as I think I am going to....I tend to use a camera to "see" It allows me to just slow down a bit and capture things that are new and interesting. I am now climbing back in the saddle to make about 6 paintings in a relatively short time and have not much of an idea of what they are going to be--I hope this recent travel time will conjure up some new work--it usually does..
